Troubleshooting Delimited 3 of 9 Barcodes

A delimited barcode contains more than one piece of data that you want to appear in separate data cells when you process your forms. One of the most common reasons a delimited 3 of 9 barcode does not recognize is that the wrong delimiter was used when creating the barcode.

When a barcode is set up as delimited in a barcode region, the software knows that the resulting data will occupy multiple columns in the dataset. To do this correctly, the software needs to know which delimiter is being coded into the barcode. The delimiters available are comma, tab, space, tilda (~), carriage return, line feed and carriage return line feed.

However, all delimiters do not work with all barcodes. With the 3 of 9 barcode, the only delimiter that will work is the space []. The important thing to remember is how to code this syntax into the barcode itself so the space delimiter is identified correctly when the barcode is processed.

When you create a 3 of 9 barcode, the exclamation point character (!) is the representation of a space [] delimiter. Therefore if a barcode is set up to have three pieces of data in it as *one!two!three*, the software will be able to recognize if it is set up in the barcode region properties as:
  - Barcode Contains Multiple Items (checked)
  - Item delimiter: Space []
  - Number of items: 3

If your barcode is delimited correctly, there may be other reasons why your barcode is not reading correctly. Please ensure you have encapsulated the entire barcode in asterisks as in the example above and that the size is at least 26 points. You should also scan forms at a resolution of 300 DPI.
